    welding helmet musings

    I didn't expect much from a helmet priced under $ 100.00 but boy, was I in for a rude awakening. The helmet is lightweight, has a huge viewing area, and no more searching for my weld start. I have been using "Bessie", (my old flip helmet) for years. No more blind mice missing my starts. I was stoked and my roommate, who owns a muffler shop couldn't believe I got it so cheap when he tried it. The thing that sold me on this one over the others was the larger viewing area it offers.     Welding newbie: Price/performance ratio seems right to me

    Just began welding, and at the advice of many, decided to buy an auto-darkening helmet. Indeed, it makes a big difference in accuracy when striking an arc and starting welds, and really is convenient. Decided on this one in part due to existing reviews, since I have no experience to judge by. After having used it a few times, I'm pleased with it. Headband is comfortable, easy to adjust. The sensitivity and darkening controls seem to work as advertised. Not extremely robust construction, but not bad either. With a little care, seems like it should last a while in hobbyist/home use.One thing to watch out for: The lens/sensor assembly is held in with a plastic bezel, which snaps out for replacement. When I received mine and opened the box, the bezel was partly jarred loose. If I hadn't noticed this and reseated it, the lens/sensor might have fallen out, in which case I wouldn't be giving it 4 stars. :)All things considered, I feel the price/performance ratio is... 4/5 G.     Great shield for the money!!

    Bought this as I needed a welding shield for the MiG welded by brother gave me to use. As I only do occasional welding, I was looking for a low cost shield that had the auto-darkening lens. In practice this shield does the job quite nicely. I could see the weld puddle and was able to control what I was doing with minimal issues. The only negatives are the lightweight construction of the helmet (I expected that) and the tensioning feature of the helmet to keep it up while not in use. Like I said for the occassional welder this is a definite "best buy". Highly recommend with the foreknowledge the helmet is lightweight in designd and durability. 4/5 Willie S.     Nice little machine

    I purchased a Speedway welder earlier and it turned out to be lousy - perhaps a good boat anchor but not much else. The CH 2150 worked perfectly out of the box. I did a good bit of reading up front and took the advice in the guide to first practice on some scrap pieces. I found the wire feed and trigger to be "touchy" and it took a bit of work to get anywhere near consistent running a bead but after about 30 minutes my confidence grew and I leaped into my project. My chore was the re-attachment of a wheel on my portable generator. Let's say my work will not win a prize at the fare for overall appearance but the wheel is re-attached and is not likely to be come dislodged at least not at the weld site. I may eventually trade up but for now the 2150 is all I need.     Very nice small welder

    I bought this as a complement to my large AC/DC stick welder and have been very impressed with it. Since I got this I haven't used the stick welder at all since I haven't had to weld anything heavier than 1/4". So far I've gone through a couple of pounds of wire.With all of these small machines, cut off the cheap, almost useless ground clamp and install a proper welding clamp (they're not expensive).Also, make SURE to not run over heat #3 unless you KNOW you have a 20 Amp outlet on a 20 Amp circuit. Any extension cord should be #10 or #12, I wouldn't use anything as small as the #14 listed in the manual.Ran mine on a 15A outlet with a 25 foot #12 extension cord yesterday for quite a bit of welding on heat #3 and the cord and plug didn't even get warm.This is a true DC welder unlike the $99 ones you will find.     eh, its ok

    I've been welding now for a few years and bought this one to do small projects. Well I found that the trigger is Very touchy and that alone makes the bead inconsistent. The power settings are easy and straight foreword. The Wire feed is just as simple. When I finally get the trigger just right to run it, you cannot run it for very long. I made a table for beating on out of all steal for my shop. I had to take a few hours brake in welding the top on. I would over heat welding half the top on. The table was 4'x2'.If the trigger issue was just mine I do hope so and would make for a great small project welder.     I have only recently purchased this welding helmet, and have used it only an hour or two, but I have been very impressed with it. If anything happens to change my opinion, I will revise this review accordingly.The auto-darkening function works. That is probably the most important feature of any auto-darkening helmet. When not darkened, the lens is comparable to dark sunglasses, so one can easily see the work and get the welding tip aligned. While I have no way of measuring how quick the response is, for all practical purposes it does darken instantly. The darkness is adjustable by a knob on the left side of the helmet, and there is a noticeable difference between darkness settings. When the arc stops, the lens instantly lightens, but to get a good look at the weld bead I find it necessary to raise the helmet.The viewing window is larger than what if found on many other helmets, and gave a good view of the work area.     Nice helmet ... but can't find replacement lens

    Great helmet for the price (actually found it cheaper at other sites when I was doing a search for replacement lenses, but I love Amazon).So now we need additional replacement lenses. Can anyone tell me how to find these?Figured out that the model number was 53928A (which isn't shown above!). Cannot find a replacement lens.     Great helmet

    i wasn't planning on buying a auto darkening helmet but i said what the heck let's try one and I choose this one because of the price and the functions which are available with it specially the shading scale for the TIG welding. and man I was in for a shock ..this is the best welding tool I've ever bought .. it works great .. it goes dark when i start welding. increase dark intensity from 9 to 13 and it works .. and really light you barely feel it.     Also bought this for my fiance. He has been a welder for over 15yrs and loves this helmet. He was a little catious at first due to not knowing anything about the company that makes it. However loves it now! The graphics are clean and bright. The only thing we didn't like is they cover the side adjustments and have to be cut inorder to adjust it.
